When someone parks their vehicle facing oncoming traffic or parking against the flow of traffic, the safety of others and themself is at risk. First, you would need to drive on the wrong side of the road to park facing traffic and then again when pulling out into head-on traffic. You might not be able to see cars coming toward you while pulling out due to a blind spot from the vehicle parked in front. Especially a bigger vehicle, your view of the traffic would be blocked. Other drivers and pedestrians might not be expecting you to come from that side of the street.
In summary, on a two-way road, you must park parallel to and with the right-hand wheels within 12 inches of the right-hand curb to the right edge of the right-hand shoulder, which makes parking against the flow of traffic illegal per Township Ordinance #2011-01 and state law. A parking violation could result in a fine of up to $300.
For everyone’s safety, Chief Ronald Sharkey urges all drivers to park on the proper side of the road.
